City of Hamburg – District of Hollstedt
Marienkirche Church
church-498525_1280.jpg
The foundations of this church were created in 1637 when on the site the cornerstone for a small chapel was placed. The later erected Marienkirche’s claim to fame is that it is older than the famous Hamburg Michel Church. This aspect is in fact the pride and joy of many community members.

Later renovations and an extension of the naves in 1953 give the church its present glory.

The Marienkirche church is therefore the oldest standing building of the city.

The Catholic Cemetery is the oldest one in town. When expansionary measures were underway in 1922 it was decided to transfer the cemetery to the other side of the river, therefore creating space for new homes.

The Protestant Church of St. Johannes was erected as late as 1961. Prior to that, the evangelical community of the township of Hollstedt held its services in a small chapel which is now used for cemetery church services.

Post-World War II saw the burial of many victims of war there which significantly expanded its use, therefore turning this Protestant cemetery into the largest one of the town.

The Mosque of the Turkisch Heritage Association of Hollstedt
The Mosque located in the township of Hollstedt was founded in 1995 by its local Turkish Heritage Association.

After working out of an adjoining building of Heideweg Nr. 41 for nearly 15 years, the Association was able to move into a purpose-built location at Wedeler Straße Nr. 38.
The Association is responsible for the upkeep of the mosque and the organization of many cultural events such as the ecumenical festival ‘Day of Creed’, drawing many non-Muslims to their venue.
